Ex RACING ICE 2 (Ex RI 2) is the annual Army Ice Sport Championship to be held in Winterberg, Germany from 12 – 19 Feb 22. The Exercise comprises of a training week followed by a race day. Regiments and Corps from across the Army will send competitors to race a 2 man Bobsleigh, Skeleton bobsleigh or Luge bobsleigh in a professional, yet fun environment. The aim of the week is primarily to decide, through competition, who the male, female, novice, junior and senior Army Champions may be, switching to training and selecting participants to return to the Inter Service Championships (ISC), taking place in Igls, Austria over 21 Feb – 05 Mar 22, in order to race in the Army team. Those successful at Ex RI 2 will stand a good chance of being selected to represent the Army at the ISC. This is a serious championship exercise with the intent to train and select athletes for future events. The AWSA will be looking for quality, not quantity.

How to Apply

In order to qualify for entry into the respective championships, individuals/crews must fulfill the following criteria:

  • Novice Driver/Slider. An individual in his/her first season as a driver or slider.
  • Novice Brake man. An individual in his/her first season as a brakeman.
  • Novice Bobsleigh Crew. A driver who is in his/her first season as a driver with a brakeman who is also in his/her first season.
  • Junior Driver/Slider. An individual in his/her second season as a driver/slider.
  • Junior Bobsleigh Crew. A driver who is in his/her second season as a driver with a brakeman who is either in his first or second season.
  • Senior. All personnel who do not qualify for novice or junior status will compete in the senior event.

Movement and Transport

Individuals and teams should seek to use their home unit MT department for support. Participants will require their own transport to and from their home units. £125pp may be claimed for transport for Germany based units and £175pp may be claimed for transport for UK based units.

Finance

All costs are to be paid by individuals or units. A rough guide to the breakdown of costs per person, are indicated in the table below (all costs are approximate figures and in Euros):

Units are requested to support individuals to keep costs to a minimum. Individuals should expect to pay no more than 1/3 of the total cost to attend as a personal contribution.

Other costs can be covered from CILOR, Army Sports Lottery grants, COPF, Berlin Memorial Fund (if applicable).

Equipment and Insurance

Equipment

All equipment is provided, less the following, which individuals are to provide:

  • Bob – Crash helmet, gloves and needle spikes (further info from bobsleigh@awsa.org.uk).
  • Luge – Gloves (issue flying gloves/cross country skiing gloves recommended) (further info from luge@awsa.org.uk).
  • Skeleton – Gloves and needle spikes (further info from skeleton@awsa.org.uk).

Insurance

All participants must have valid ice sports insurance and a valid EHIC card. Insurance can be obtained from Towergate Wilson (01242 533792) or Insignia Underwriting (+44 (0) 1722 597980), and EHIC cards are available free of charge online here. Note that other websites may charge up to £50 to middleman the application, so please ensure your soldiers use the official NHS/Gov site.
