Alpine Skiing is the oldest of all the Army’s Winter Sports. The Army Ski Association was formed at the behest of Field Marshal Montgomery in 1947 to provide a break from routine training and operations in the immediate post-war years, whilst developing military and technical skills on snow and ice.

CALLING ALL ASPIRANT SKI AND SNOWBOARD RACERS

Have you had at least 2 weeks instruction on snow and want to make the move to racing? Ex SNOW LION is the Army’s foundation snow sports event, designed to introduce competent skiers and boarders to racing through gates in Slalom and Giant Slalom. Boarders will also receive some coaching in snow park skills.

Ex SNOW LION 2020 will take place 1 – 7 March in Aviemore, Cairngorm. Accommodation will be in Rothiemurchus Lodge. Entry is open to all Regular and Reserve units for both teams and individuals. This is an ideal opportunity for units to develop their B teams, increase participation or for those units who do not currently take part in Winter Sports – a great launch pad.

The exercise instruction can be found at Annex E to 2019DIN 07-089 Army Alpine and Nordic exercises 2020. POC is WO2 Dave Thomson (SNIY-E-SSM).

AIM

The aim of ExSL is to introduce competitive snow sports (Alpine, Telemark, Snowboard (SB) and para-snowsports) to service personnel and enable the introduction to racing in Scotland.

ObjectivesThe objectives of ExSL18 are to:

  • Encourage novice participation in snow sports to develop a competitive skill base in an unfamiliar environment that empowers the individual to better cope with stress, pressure and fatigue.
  • Develop Unit teams of the future, B Teams, development squads and female teams from units that already have a snow sports presence and introduce those units with no history of competing at snow sports to racing in a controlled environment.
  • Identify and nurture new snow sports talent to progress into unit teams and on to the Divisional and Army Championships .
