INTRODUCTION TO ALPINE

Alpine Skiing is the oldest of all the Army’s Winter Sports. The Army Ski Association was formed at the behest of Field Marshal Montgomery in 1947 to provide a break from routine training and operations in the immediate post-war years, whilst developing military and technical skills on snow and ice.
Since then the Army Ski Association has developed into the Army Winter Sports Association and the Army’s participation in Alpine Skiing has grown apace. Well over 1000 people take part in Army Alpine Ski racing each year and our mission is simply to find the fastest skiers in the Army. Once we have done that we then put them up against the Navy and the RAF. The Army currently runs a total of 14 different race championships. These range from the various Corps Championships run by the Army’s different Corps for their members, to the two Divisional Championships – Exercises SPARTAN HIKE and PIPEDOWN and then finally the Army Championship – Exercise LION’S CHALLENGE. The TA Championships – Exercise SNOW LION – are also run annually in Aviemore for TA and Reservists. If you want to get involved in Alpine Ski racing then your first port of call is your Unit Sports Officer. If you need more information then please contact us.
KEY PERSONALITIES
Brigadier Rob Weighill
Brigadier Weighill joined the British Army in 1981 and was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in May 1982. He was posted to Münster in Germany for 4 years. During this time he led the Regiment’s cross country ski team which managed to qualify for the Army and National Championships 3 years running. In 1986 he was posted to 7 Para RHA for 3 years as a forward observer. He ran the Royal Artillery cross country ski training in Switzerland 2 years running while serving with the Regiment and managed the Regimental ski teams. In November 2000 he took command of his Regiment based on Thorney Island. He established new Regimental ski teams consisting of both cross country and alpine disciplines. As CRA 1(UK) Armd Div he was responsible for running Ex PIPEDOWN in 2009. In late 2009, and after a career heavily involved in the nordic discipline, he jumped skis and accepted an offer to become the Chairman of Army Alpine Skiing – his wife and 3 children are thrilled!
